For Students

[Cancelled] Physics Study Tour 2020 (ILO/011)

In this study tour, students will visit some cutting-edge research facilities in Europe related to particle physics and its applications. The major highlights of the trip are to visit four major research facilities: CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Zurich, Switzerland), Nikhef (Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics in Amsterdam, The Netherlands), and ASML (Eindhoven, The Netherlands).

In addition to the rare opportunity to interact with front-line researchers and witness first-hand how international research collaboration is carried out, students will also gain some hands-on experience through collaborating with physics undergraduates from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to work on particle physics data analysis projects. Students will learn some analysis tools and work on Large Hardon Collider (LHC) and/or Monte Carlo data to ‘discover’ new particles.

This programme is co-organized with Department of Physics, CUHK.

Upon completion of the study tour, student participants should be able to:

  • experience learning in another country and enhance their knowledge in the respective area of study;
  • develop friendship, ideally long term, with overseas students and professionals and continue to share their learning experience with each other;
  • experience cultural exchange;
  • widen their scope of learning experiences and explore their role as a global citizen.

19 July to 26 July 2020 (Cancelled)

Four pre-tour lectures will be conducted in May (Saturday). Student members should participate all at least two lectures in this programme.
