For Students

Physics Study Tour 2019 (ILO/011)

In this study tour entitled “Event Horizons”, students will visit some cutting edge research facilities in the USA related to physics and astronomy. Major highlights of the trip include the Event Horizon Telescope project and Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, the LIGO prototype at Caltech, and research labs in The University of Arizona and University of California, Berkeley. In addition to the rare opportunity to interact with front-line researchers and witness first-hand how international research collaboration is carried out, students will also gain some hands-on experience through collaborating with physics undergraduates from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and participate in projects on astronomical observation.

Upon completion of the pre tour workshops, student participants should be able to:

  • acquire basic knowledge about black holes
  • appreciate how astronomical discoveries are made
  • acquire basic knowledge about astronomical observation

Upon completion of the study tour, student participants should be able to:

  • gain valuable learning experience in another country and knowledge in physics;
  • develop friendship, ideally long term, with overseas students and professionals and continue to share their learning experience with each other.
  • promote cultural exchange while enhancing their academic development; and
  • widen their scope of learning experiences and explore their role as a global citizen.
